Forensic analysis of a suspect's cell phone by a Fort Worth Detective has laid to rest a double murder case from 2018.

Jonathan Fulton Smith was arrested in 2020 on capital murder and arson charges related to the 2018 deaths of Jessica Walling and her 10-year-old son Chevy, in Bogata, Texas.

According to KWTX: "Jessica died of smoke inhalation and Chevy was found inside the bathtub with the water running."

Police say that with the two witnesses to the crime both having passed prior to the trial, the damaged cell phone in question was the final remaining piece of evidence against Smith.

Thankfully, Detective Ha Nguyen of the Fort Worth Police Department's Digital Forensic Lab was able to use 'the chip-off method' to ascertain data from the phone's motherboard. After further analysis of this retrieved data, police were able to recover text messages and calls that linked Smith to the murders.

Details of Smith's conviction are as yet unknown.
