DFW is one of the few cities in the country that has two major commercial airports for travelers to choose from. While DFW International Airport and Dallas Love Field are two of the biggest airports in the country, one North Texas city is hoping to add a third.
It was recently announced that the city of McKinney plans to ask residents to help fund a $300 million project that would turn McKinney National Airport into the metroplex’s third commercial airport.
McKinney National Airport is a general aviation airport that is used as a reliever airport for the two commercial airports in DFW, as well as the home to many business aircrafts. However, as Collin County continues to grow, city leaders hope to turn it into a new commercial airport that would connect the city to the rest of the country. The $300 million plan would be to add two to four gate terminals at the airport, which would help attract a major national airline to provide air service to Collin County.

According to Dallas Morning News, under this plan the airport could be ready as early as 2026. “There are many regions in this country with similar demographics, with similar populations, and they’re supporting three or five airports,” said McKinney Mayor George Fuller. If approved, DFW may soon have another option for air travel.
