Things are dire down on the farm in much of Texas.

Bitter cold and power outages have led to a crisis on many farms and ranches in Texas. The weather misery has left livestock dead and raised fears herds could run short of food and water.

Marion County rancher Joe Kendrick says his hogs can stay in the barn, but cattle have to be outside requiring more time and attention.

"Feeding is stepped up some cause it just takes extra energy for them to survive outside and we have to make sure water is also working and nothing is froze up," Kendrick said.

Some cattle and hogs have to be euthanized while many Texas dairy farmers are having to dump milk after plant shutdowns. The packing industry is feeling some of the same pressure as transporting cattle is difficult. Touch-and-go power has left some plants in Texas completely down and worker absenteeism is always an issue in these frigid conditions.
