Colleyville to host service to promote unity one month after synagogue standoff

The city of Colleyville will hold a service Monday night to promote unity after the 11-hour standoff at Congregation Beth Israel last month.

About 200 local, state and federal law enforcement officers responded to Congregation Beth Israel on Jan. 15 when a man interrupted Shabbat service.

Four people were taken as hostages. One was released during the stand-off, and the others escaped as the FBI's Hostage Rescue Team entered the synagogue and killed the suspect.

"We unequivocally denounce hate and violence in any form," Mayor Richard Newton said in a video posted on YouTube the day after the standoff. "It has no place in our city."

Newton called Congregation Beth Israel a "wonderful house of worship in Colleyville and a valuable member of the Colleyville Ministerial Alliance."

The service Monday will include speakers and music.

"After the recent terrorist attack at Congregation Beth Israel, the community needs to come together now more than ever to celebrate each other and have a moment of reflection," the city of Colleyville wrote on the event's Facebook page.

Doors at Colleyville Center open at 6:30 p.m. The service begins at 7 p.m., followed by "Dessert Fellowship" at 8 p.m.
