A husband and wife from rural Collin County have been indicted for abusing two women, one an elderly woman and the other a woman with a reduced mental capacity.
Joseph Calderon, 38, and Alicia Calderon, 36 are facing a total of six charges in what one deputy called the worst abuse case she’s seen.
A probable cause affidavit said deputies were sent to the couple’s trailer on Park Drive, north of Wylie, on February 2. They found that a 26-year old woman had been taken to the hospital for severe burns and lacerations.
After further investigation they found that a 75-year old woman locked in a small room that had been built on the back of the trailer. The woman, who was unable to speak, had also been taken to the hospital suffering from severe bedsores. The wounds were so severe that the woman screamed in pain when the hospital staff moved her from the stretcher to the bed, according to the affidavit.
The affidavit said the elderly woman had been living in the room with the 26-year old and two pit bulls. There were feces and urine visible.
During an interview with a deputy, the 26-year old woman said she had been forced by the couple to steal and had been locked in a dog kennel and had boiling water poured on her on several occasions. The woman had been beaten unconscious several times with kitchen utensils, according to the affidavit.
The couple is also accused of draining the elderly woman’s bank account. She had been left more than $78,000 in inheritance at one point. The document says Alicia Calderon had been put on the woman’s bank account to take care of her. But within three months the couple, who were not working, had drained the account of all the money. In fact, the bank said the Calderon’s had racked up hundreds of dollars in overdraft fees.
Jail records show both have bonded out of the Collin County jail.
