A major road construction project is now underway in Denton County.
"The U.S. 380 project is 10 and a half miles of roadway," says Kendall Kirkham Sloan, TxDOT spokeswoman, "and it spans from U.S. 377 To west of County Road 26 at the Collin County Line."
A major part of the $140 million project is widening the roadway from two lanes in each direction to three.
"We'll widen U.S. 380 from four to six lanes, (and) we're adding in a curbed median," says Sloan. "We are approving the sidewalks there and then adding grade separations at five major intersections."
Those intersections are FM 720/Oak Grove Ln., Navo Rd., FM 423/Gee Rd., Championship Dr./S. Teel Pkwy., and Legacy Dr.
"The primary purpose is to improve mobility by increasing capacity in the area and reducing congestion," Sloan says. "It's also going to improve pedestrian access."
The work will be done in three phases; the first one involves shifting all eastbound traffic onto the westbound lanes for the entire length of the project.
"That will shift traffic to the north side, and then all the work will be done on the south side," says Sloan; "and that should go through the end of 2022."
Phase two will reverse that; all westbound traffic will shift to the eastbound lanes.
The third and final phase involves the grade separation work in the median.
The entire project is slated to be completed in 2025.
