North Texas, like most of the nation, is seeing an alarming increase in drug overdoes.
Overdose deaths across the nation increased by over 30% in the last year.
In North Texas, doctors at Cook Children's say they have seen overdoses spike as well.
Artee Gandhi, medical director of Pain Management at Cook Children's says the ER has been overrun with teens who have started mixing several drugs.
"They are having pill parties, where they have started mixing all kinds of drugs in their medicine cabinet and popping them," Gandhi says.
As of May, 17th patients were admitted to Cook Children’s for opioid ingestion in 2021. Compare that to the entire year of 2020 when 16 patients were admitted for the same reason.
More than 4,000 Texans died of drug overdoses last year, up 33%. Texas deaths made up about 4.5% of the number of overdose deaths in the U.S, which's the largest since 2015.
