Reports say American Airlines Flight 488 was boarding at Ramon Villeda Morales International Airport in San Pedro, Honduras when a man suddenly forced his way into the cockpit and damaged some of the plane's flight controls before trying to escape through an open window.

Officials say the flight crew stopped the man from escaping and held him for police. He was detained in Honduras. There is no word on his identity or why he attacked.

The damaged jet was taken out of service and American flew in another plane which took off late last night.

After a three-hour flight, the plane landed in Miami early this morning, nearly eight hours behind schedule.
