Firefighters at the "1148 Fire" near Possum Kingdom Lake have now completed control lines around the fire. Wednesday afternoon, the fire remained at 500 acres and was 15% contained.

"Engine crews and hand crews are going in, looking for any remaining embers, smoking logs and putting them out so we make sure the fire stays in its current footprint," said the Texas A&M Forest Service's James Wettstaed.

Wettstaed said crews were monitoring wind to ensure any embers would not be able to blow outside the line to start a new fire.

"We have lines all around the fire, and they're working today on putting out hot spots that might threaten to escape," Wettstaed said.

With fires burning across Texas, Wettstaed says California, Georgia, Massachusetts, and New Mexico had sent crews here to add additional manpower. He said Texas does the same when other states are dealing with fires.

Wettstaed said wildland firefighters train with the same system and work with the same levels of qualification.

"You can go to California in the role of a strike team leader because you're all trained the same way and know how the system works," Wettstaed said. "You slot into those positions. It's a seamless machine, basically."

Eight structures had been destroyed through Wednesday afternoon, but crews had not confirmed whether any were homes or simply sheds or other buildings.

No major injuries have been reported.
