The City of Dallas made it through this week's icy weather with no major city-wide issues. Emergency management officials say they have been able to refine their response plan based on their experience dealing with storms in 2021 and 2022.
"We have had a lot of these, and every time we get better," said Travis Houston with the city's Office of Emergency Management. "I think that's a big part of the reason that this went very smooth."
Houston says no response is ever perfect, but the city does try to analyze each incident to determine areas that could be improved.
"You do your best to identify what those corrections actions are and how they need to be addressed - if that's planning, training, funding for equipment, all of those things," he said.
The city did experience some problems this year with trash pickup during the peak days of the storm because trucks were unable to navigate some side streets or unimproved alleyways. Trash pickup is resuming today on its normal schedule. Trucks will be in neighborhoods where pickup is normally done on Fridays.
"For those customers in Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday collection areas that Sanitation was unable to service this week, those customers may set out additional garbage and recyclable materials on their next collection day next week," said Cliff Gillespie, Assistant Director of Sanitation. "We ask that those bagged garbage or bundled recyclables that will not fit in roll carts be placed on top of or next to the containers for collection."
