A charter school in Dallas handed out Lego sets to its students Tuesday as part of a donation from the non-profit, World Vision. The sets were donated to Trinity Basin Prep as part of "Giving Tuesday."

"It allows the students to be creative at home," says Trinity Basin Prep Principal Jose Carillo. "Sometimes, they don't have toys like Legos, so it's going to be a nice early Christmas present."

Carillo says many of his students are from families who live below the poverty line, so they may not have access to as many toys. He says kids can have fun with Legos, but they can also apply lessons they learn at school in a practical environment.

"Their motor skills, a lot of these kids are early childhood, so they're learning how to manipulate some of those blocks," he says. "They can just think outside the box and learn how to create things."

He says Legos can teach kids about shapes, how to build structures, and weight distribution. Kids also received a membership to WorldReader, an organization that provides free books to children in areas considered "book deserts."

In addition to Legos for kids, teachers could choose supplies from a truck World Vision parked at the school.

"We're just very proud of our teachers," Carillo says. "We have the most compassionate and caring teachers here at our school."

World Vision says it works with more than 100 schools in North Texas. For "Giving Tuesday," the organization says donations of up to $1 million are being matched. Details are available here.
