In Austin, state lawmakers have been working on redistricting maps and now the Dallas City Council is tackling redistricting as well.
Today marks the first full meeting of the Dallas Redistricting Commission. The commission is meeting over the next several months to redraw district boundaries and make sure that they all have around the same number of residents.

Dallas is using a consulting group. Commission members are still driving the redistricting process, and technical experts with a Virginia-based firm are drawing the actual maps.
US Census numbers show that overall, the population of Dallas has grown from around 1.2 million in 2010, to around 1.3 million in 2020. This population increase means some residents could find themselves in different Council districts.
Dallas redraws district lines every ten years.
The proposed map has to be approved at least 90 days before the next City Council election. A more detailed timeline could start forming at the meeting today.
