A different committee discussed leaf blowers in 2019 but did not take any action.

Critics say the gas-powered leaf blowers are too loud and that their exhaust contributes to air pollution. The presentation assembled by city staffers for today's meeting also highlights concerns about equity, noting that a large portion of landscape workers are Hispanic and those workers are exposed to noxious exhaust and unsafe noise levels.

Several cities around the country, including some in Texas, have already adopted noise ordinances effectively requiring yard maintenance companies to switch to battery-powered leaf blowers.

Today's meeting of the Environment and Sustainability Committee is not scheduled to make any final decisions, but could give direction to city staffers to draw up new ordinances for consideration by the full Dallas City Council.
