A Dallas firefighter is headed to the White House this weekend to celebrate an Independence Day unlike any other.

"I'm very excited, it's obviously a big honor," says Dallas Fire-Rescue Cpt. Christian Hinojosa, who also serves as Vice President of the Dallas Hispanic Firefighters Association. He's part of a small delegation chosen to represent the National Association of Hispanic Firefighters in Washington, D.C., over the Fourth of July.

"We'll arrive in D.C. tomorrow and hopefully catch our breath and go take in some sights," he says. "And then Sunday afternoon we'll join some other individuals at the White House for a Bar-B-Q. After that, we'll get to see a firework show. Pretty much your typical Fourth of July activities, but not really."

Hinojosa says he hoping to get to see President Biden. They’ve actually met once before:

"He and I have been promoted since we last met," he says. "I was a lieutenant and he was Vice President, so I would love the opportunity again to say hello."

Several other front line workers have been invited to the festivities. This is one of the White House's first big social events since the start of the pandemic. The theme is “America getting back together.”
