DALLAS (1080 KRLD) - A Dallas firefighter was injured while helping rescue people from a burning apartment building.

Firefighters were called to the Legends on Lake Highlands Apartments near White Rock Lake, where some people were trapped inside a burning building.

"We were able to rescue at the very least three people," says Jason Evans with Dallas Fire-Rescue. "Unfortunately, during one of those rescues, one of our firefighters fell from a ladder and suffered a non-life-threatening leg injury."

The firefighter's injury is not serious.

"He was taken to the hospital, and he was treated for his injuries," says Evans. "He is expected to be okay."

The firefighter wasn't the only one injured in the fire.

"We also had two residents from that apartment building who were taken to a local hospital for unspecified burn injuries," Evans says.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

"Investigators were able to determine that the fire started in the kitchen area of a first-floor apartment," says Evans. "The cause is still going to be listed as undetermined because we don't know exactly how it began -- only where it most likely did."

Firefighters were able to keep the fire from spreading throughout the entire building.

"We were able to limit the damage to four apartments in that building," Evans says. "There are a total of 16 apartments in that building."

Fortunately, no one will be left homeless.

"(We have an) unknown number of families or residents that might be displaced," says Evans; "but according to apartment management, they have enough vacant units on-site to accommodate anyone who is."
