The City of Dallas is trying to make huge improvements to its commercial and residential permitting process. Many builders have complained that it takes far too long to get the appropriate permits from the city which leads to delayed construction.
Councilman Tennell Atkins says one of the problems is the culture within the department.
"When someone walks in there, they're lost," Atkins said. "They don't know who to speak to, they are saying that 'hey, I've got an appointment with John Doe' - John Doe is too busy, John Doe won't come out until he finishes with a client."
In response, department heads say they will hire more for quicker turnarounds to the permit process. City manager T.C. Broadnax has vowed to make the permit office more efficient in the coming year.
