Dallas Police are launching a new unit to try to protect elderly people from scammers.

The Elder Fraud Unit will work within financial crimes to look into suspicious activity where an older person might open a new account or start withdrawing large amounts of money. Dallas Police Assistant Chief Albert Martinez is also urging adults to talk to their parents now about how they'll handle finances in case they start to develop dementia.

Deputy Chief Teena Schultz says a bank teller recently noticed a strange transaction by a customer. She says an elderly man was trying to withdraw $10,000 for jewelry, and the teller called 911.

She says the suspect admitted to what was happening and has been charged with felony theft and exploitation of an elderly person.
