Last month, Dallas PD began shielding information, saying it is to protect people who report crimes from retribution from the criminals. Right now, the information removed from public view is mainly names and addresses in online crime reports.

The changes came without input from the community or from the City Council.

Police Chief Eddie Garcia says removing the information may build trust with crime victims, making them more likely to co-operate. But critics contend the redactions may be designed to keep the media and other watchdogs from keeping tabs on police investigations.
