Dallas Police say they have been investigating recent incidents where unknown suspects have used red and blue lights on their vehicles to cut through traffic and even pull people over.
Dallas Police are offering tips for drivers to follow if they are concerned an officer may not be who he claims to be.
If you are being pulled over, police say you can call 9-1-1 and ask the dispatcher if the officer pulling you over is indeed making a traffic stop in that area. If the dispatcher cannot confirm that you are being pulled over by a police officer, stay on the line with the dispatcher, and ask for police assistance. Police also say to drive to a safe location.
Police remind everyone that pretending to be a police officer to get someone to obey your authority is a 3rd-degree felony punishable by a prison sentence of 2 to 10 years.
