Dallas police may want a civilian group to help them with their lagging response times.
Dallas police say they are getting more calls for service than ever and because of that response times have been severely impacted. Robert Uribe is the 911 administrator for the City of Dallas and says often reporting non-emergency incidents is better done online.
"The workload for the Dallas Police Department Emergency Report System is just growing," Uribe said. "Almost 20% of the workload is related to calls that are not in progress and may have alternative reporting methods available to them."
One of the options police are exploring is creating a civilian unit to respond to low-priority calls. Chief Eddie Garcia says this could free up to 64 officers during the course of a year.
"Instead of that officer having to respond to that minor non-injury accident, that officer stays in service to then either perform the duties of patrol, do other things that they're doing currently," Garcia said.
The city council will learn more about this option later this month.
