Dallas police roll out apartment crime plan

Crime is trending down in Dallas, but police are still concerned about certain high-crime apartments.

Data shows that 26 apartment complexes accounted for 19% of violent crime in 2021.

Tuesday, police presented their new plan to the city council, with the aim of bringing crime numbers down.

The plan calls for police to partner with city departments to research these complexes where crimes are happening and create an individual strategy for how to curb the trend.

Sgt. James Stephens says they will boost community engagement by holding youth events, community walks, and more.

"During peak hours of crime, our officers go there once an hour, with lights on patrolling the area," Stephens said. "We are rolling out a pilot program of bike patrols to focus on these apartment complexes."

But councilman Adam McGough wasn't happy with the plan claiming it lacked a timeline, performance measures, and what departments will work with police.

"I know it's been said that it's a priority, but I'd like to see it be a priority," McGough said. "Right now in areas I'm most familiar with, crime is going up."

Police say they'll take the feedback and come with more details in the future.
