The surge of migrants in El Paso is expected to make a pretty big impact here in North Texas.

Starting tomorrow, buses of migrants sent from the “Ellis Island of the Southwest” are expected to start arriving in Dallas.

“We’re expecting about five buses a week,” said Andy Stoker, VP of the Thanks-Giving Foundation, parent organization for the group in charge of the Dallas Responds, a collective of faith based organizations and nonprofits.

“We are preparing for migrants to start arriving,” Stoker said, adding that Oak Lawn United Methodist Church will act as a hub for new arrivals.

Stoker said the migrants being sent through Dallas have already been processed and will likely carry immigration papers. He says most will simply pass through, and Dallas Responds feels prepared to help them get where they’re going.

“The Dallas community is built for just a time as this,” he said. “We can and will receive these beloved and make sure there is an opportunity to care for as many folks as can come.”

Officials say El Paso is planning to bus migrants to Dallas, Houston and other cities with major airport hubs. Stoker says El Paso is communicating with these cities to make sure the migrants don’t overwhelm them.

“This is what the holidays are all about,” Stoker said. “Offering [migrants] food and shelter, a message of hope, and a place for a time where they can regroup, reset and reframe their lives in a new way.”
