It’s not the first 'First Day' for the Dallas ISD, but it is the biggest and the last.
More than 180 DISD campuses reopened their doors on Monday. Five campuses opened on the 1st of August on the School Day Redesign calendar. 41 opened on the 8th of August on the Intersession calendar. The remaining schools opening today are on the base calendar, which most closely resembles a typical school year.
DISD Superintendent Dr. Stephanie Elizalde greeted students at Bethune Elementary. She said she felt like she was coming home, and even dressed the part.
"I absolutely had to wear my ruby red slippers," Dr. Elizalde said, showing off her shiny footwear. "I do feel like I clicked my heels and was able to come back home."
Dr. Elizalde said opening different schools on different schedules wasn’t as difficult of an adjustment as it could have been.
"How could it not be easier given the last two years?" Dr. Elizalde said. "I don’t even think that I can take credit for anything being easier. It’s our team."
When asked about school safety, Dr. Elizalde said the board is keeping its ears open, listening to parent concerns and taking suggestions.
