There's a new resident at the Dallas Zoo. The zoo welcomed a new baby elephant on February 26th. One of the zoo's female elephants, Mlilo, gave birth after being pregnant for 21 months.
"We are so excited that this new baby is here with us. We have been anxiously awaiting this little boy," said Dr. Anne Burgdorf, Associate Vice President Animal Health and Welfare at the Dallas Zoo. "He looks great. He stood up very quickly. He was nursing right away, and we were so excited to see a healthy calf."
The mother and calf are being kept away from visitors for now, but the Dallas Zoo has posted a series of videos on its Facebook page to let people see their development.
The baby elephant weighed 290 pounds and is developing normally.
"He is starting to get more curious," said Audrey Lagemann, Elephant Manager at the Dallas Zoo. "Mom is actually trying to keep up with him at this point."
