Dentonites are making their voices heard as they push to decriminalize pot.

The group Decriminalize Denton says it has the community's support, now it's up to the city council to decide whether the issue will be on the November ballot.

The city is holding a hearing on July 19. Before that, Decriminalize Denton is holding virtual town hall meetings to raise awareness and address any concerns. The first one was last night.

"It went well," said Nick Stevens, with Decriminalize Denton. "We had a good turnout, a lot of good questions. As we prepare for the public hearing with the city council ... we're reaching out to the community to answer questions and educate about the ordinance."

Stevens said the ordinance they're fighting for would make it so that people caught with a small amount of pot wouldn't get arrested or even cited. "This is the most that we can legally do as a city, we can't go further than decriminalizing."

Decriminalize Denton is planning a rally at city hall on the same day the city is holding its public hearing. It'll kick off at 6 p.m.

"At 6:30, the public hearing begins," Stevens said. "And that's when Denton residents will have the opportunity to make their voices heard."
