Details of Dallas' 'Southern Gateway' deck park released

Dallas (1080 KRLD) - Dallas City Council members heard more details about the 5.5-acre "Southern Gateway" deck park that will be built on parts of I-35E to connect Oak Cliff with other areas of the city, much in the same way Klyde Warren Park was done.

Phase One of the deck park will span from Ewing and Marsalis avenues on I-35E, directly next to the Dallas Zoo, and feature a lawn and over 250 trees. It will also include a stage and pavilion, a children's playground, a dedicated food truck area and a multipurpose building.

Councilman Adam Bazaldua says this will be a tremendous boost for the area.

"This is bringing in an amenity that has shown a huge success with Klyde Warren in connecting two neighborhoods," Bazaldua said. "I think that it's even more of a win to see the connectivity be something that directly combats intentional efforts to break up neighborhoods."

Construction of the park itself is set to begin in 2022, with a total price tag of $82 million. It aims to open in late 2023.
