The U.S. Attorney's office says a Fort Worth man teamed up with a retired FBI agent to cheat a woman out of three-quarters of a million dollars.
Court papers say 63-year old Joseph DeLeon joined up with 62-year-old former FBI agent William Stone to swindle a woman out of $750,000 by convincing her she was on secret drug probation. The indictment says the two took aim at the woman's inheritance and convinced her to pay them fees for a court-ordered mentoring program. None of it was true.
Former Dallas U.S. Attorney Richard Roper says crooked former cops are in a position to take advantage of people, and particularly the elderly.
"The elderly that have a lot of respect for the FBI and law enforcement in general," Roper said. "And they're quick to believe what they're told by law enforcement."
Roper says if you are ever approached by people claiming to be feds but who want to do things through back channels you should get in touch with a lawyer to verify it's a real deal.
