The sentence of life without parole was automatic.

It was Vandewege who called 911 and reported he had found the bodies of the two and that his home looked like a burglary.

Police determined the scene had been staged.

Vandewege was arrested several days later, speeding through Colorado. Prosecutors told the jury he was on the run by then. The motive? He stood to collect more than $700,000 in life insurance.
