The Fort Worth Police Department has a word of warning for those considering celebrating the new year with fireworks.

Popping off or possessing fireworks within the city limits of Fort Worth are illegal, with fines of up to $2,000 for violators.

Fort Worth Police officer Buddy Calzada says not only are they illegal, but they're also very dangerous.

"It might still be lit on its way down and we've seen house fires, large grass fires, destruction of property from a simple firework," Calzada said.

Furthermore, Fort Worth Police remind you that firing guns into the air is also illegal, and those penalties are even more severe - up to a year in prison and a $4,000 fine.
