Dallas (1080 KRLD) - Today is "Free Fishing Day" on Texas lakes and in parks managed by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. People can fish in those locations on Saturday, June 5th without buying a fishing license.
"It's a wonderful opportunity for the two-million anglers we have across the State of Texas to take somebody fishing," said Tom Lang, Outreach Director for the Inland Fisheries Division of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. "We want our anglers to introduce them to the joys of fishing the same way somebody did for them coming up."
TPWD officials hope people who are introduced to fishing this weekend will find they enjoy it - and return to a Texas lake in the future.
"Once you've enjoyed Free Fishing Day, go on and buy your fishing license," said Lang. "The great thing about that is...is by law, all those dollars from your fishing license go to protect and conserve those fishing resources that you're enjoying so much."
The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department has a list of participating lakes and state parks on its website along with a page devoted to fishing tips.
Some lakes in the Dallas-Fort Worth area may have limited access this weekend because of high water levels caused by the recent rain.
