Frisco (1080 KRLD) - A Frisco man has pleaded guilty to shooting a DPS trooper after a chase more than two years ago. Bryan Cahill, 44, is letting a jury decide the punishment.
Cahill was initially stopped for speeding up the Dallas North Tollway at more than 100 miles per hour on March 29. 2019. Instead of waiting for his ticket, Cahill jumped back in his car and sped off, leading to a chase, an exchange of gunfire and a standoff that lasted more than 15 hours.
The standoff forced residents of the La Valencia at Starwood apartments in Frisco to remain locked in their homes until police used a robot armed with an explosive to blow a door open and bring things to an arrest.
Prosecutors played both dashboard video and body camera video showing the traffic stop then the chase and the exchange of gunfire. Trooper Traveres Webb was hit in the leg by one bullet. The shooting left him disabled to the point where he may not be able to return to work as an officer.
“I knew I was going down. I was trying to take a step and my leg totally gave out on me,” he said. “I knew something was wrong. I didn’t know how bad it was, but I knew something was wrong.”
The veteran trooper’s voice quivered as he told the jury his wife at first thought he was joking when he called to say he had been shot. But things turned serious when Webb learned his wound may have ended his career.
“It’s hard. This is what I do. I protect people. The issue with that is is that I may have to be retired. I can’t perform my job duties.” Webb said.
The charges Cahill pleaded guilty to include aggravated assault against a public servant. In all, five of the seven charges could carry life prison terms.
