FORT WORTH (1080 KRLD) - The investigation continues into an officer-involved shooting in Fort Worth over the weekend.

Shortly after 9:30 Sunday evening, police were called to a unit at The Tides On Randol East apartments off Randol Mill Rd. near I-30 on a report of a suicidal man.

"When officers arrived on scene, they knocked on the door and announced who they were," says Fort Worth Police Chief Neil Noakes. "They did not have anyone answer the door but instead heard someone from inside say, 'Don't do it.'

"Fearing that someone inside was in danger and feeling they must act, they forced entry into the residence," Chief Noakes continued.

Once inside, they encountered Matthew Watson, 39, who was holding an AR-style rifle.

Police say Watson tried shooting himself, but there was no ammunition inside the gun.

"They gave him multiple commands to drop the weapon while they maintained a position of cover behind the threshold of the doorway," says Noakes. "(Watson) then approached the officers and raised the rifle towards the officers as they continued to plead with them to drop the weapon. One officer fired his handgun, striking the suspect, who then fell to the floor."

According to a news release, the officer who shot Watson is identified as C. Jones.

The other officers who responded were L.K. Gibson, P.D. Thomas and J.L. Carden.

Watson remains hospitalized at JPS. His condition is unknown at this time.

By standard procedure, all officers involved are on paid administrative leave, and a Tarrant County grand jury will decide whether any charges will be filed.
