Governor Abbott declares "ERCOT reform" emergency item for Texas legislature

Texas Governor Greg Abbott has declared "ERCOT reform" an emergency item for the Texas legislature, and a hearing next week aims to figure out how to prevent rolling blackouts from happening again.

The Texas house state affairs and energy resources committees will meet a week from Thursday. House Speaker Dade Phelan says the committees must "cut through finger-pointing" and hear directly from stakeholders about why the electric grid went down when people needed it most.

Energy resources committee chair Craig Goldman says two million Texans were left without power, some for hours and some for days, so the hearing will give everyone a chance to hear from regulators and grid operators.

The director of operations for the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) says the number of controlled outages remains high, but they're optimistic that number will keep coming down throughout the day.
