Texas Governor Greg Abbott is urging the leaders of several state agencies to promote the iWatch Texas reporting program after the Uvalde school shooting. The program was started in 2013 as part of the Texas DPS' Suspicious Activity Reporting Network.
The Governor has written a letter to the Director of the DPS, plus the leaders of the Texas Education Agency and the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. He's urging them to expand and accelerate their efforts to promote the ability of students, teachers and other school employees to report suspicious activity.
"One recommendation provided by the Secret Service to stem the tide of school violence is for individuals who witness alarming behavior to report it to the appropriate authorities so that interventions may occur before a mass attack is carried out," Gov. Abbott wrote.
He wants the state agencies to make sure students, parents and teachers know about the iWatch Texas system. He's also telling those agencies to conduct a "robust rollout" of the program to communities and school districts across the state.
