The State of Texas can begin enforcing Texas Governor Greg Abbott's ban on school districts adopting their own mask mandates after a decision by the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans.

The Dallas ISD and several other districts had adopted policies requiring students, teachers and visitors to their facilities to wear face masks indoors to help limit the spread of COVID-19. Governor Abbott issued an executive order blocking those mask mandates.
A group called Disability Rights Texas filed a lawsuit, arguing the Governor's ban had a disproportionate impact on disabled students who are at a greater risk from COVID-19.
A federal judge in Austin agreed and issued an injunction prohibiting the state from enforcing the Governor's executive order.
The State of Texas appealed that decision, and the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals granted a request by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton to stay the ruling while the appeal is being heard.
