Following this week’s deadly shooting spree in Georgia, one local police department is making an extra effort to keep Asian Americans safe.

Grand Prairie Police are increasing patrols in Asian American communities, markets, and at Asia Times Square. Chief Daniel Scesney says crime is actually down in Grand Prairie, including crimes against Asian Americans, but he wants people to feel as safe as possible.

“What is concerning to me is there is fear in the air,” Chief Scesney says. “I don’t want anyone coming to work feeling afraid or feeling like they have to look over their shoulder. If they look over their shoulder, I want them to see a Grand Prairie police officer.”

Chief Scesney says citizens in Grand Prairie, especially those in Asian American communities, have expressed appreciation for the extra security measures.

KRLD has reached out to other police departments this week, including Fort Worth, Arlington and Irving. They tell us at this time they have no plans to beef up any specific patrols, but they are monitoring the situation and will make changes if they need to.
