A controversial plan being considered by the Grapevine-Colleyville ISD is sparking heated debate between educators and parents.

The school board met last night to discuss what they’re calling the Classical Social and Emotional Learning Policy. If passed, it would make the teaching of gender fluidity and critical race theory a fireable offense within the district. It would regulate books on those topics, too.

A crowd of people gathered to make themselves heard during last night's meeting. Some spoke in support of the proposal:

"I'm glad that you as a board are coming together to discuss what I think is one of the most important topics facing our district right now," one man said.
Some parents called it a "common sense" policy, adding that it would solve the problem with books and other controversial issues.

Others wholeheartedly disagree with the plan, however, and made sure to let the board know.

"This is not what we want to teach our kids, to be scared, angry, or insecure," one parent said. Another called it an anti-diversity, anti-inclusion policy.

On top of regulating lessons and books, the policy would ban trans kids from playing sports and using bathrooms matching their gender identity. It encourages teachers to avoid discussing hot-button debate topics and controversial issues of public policy. If they have to talk about it, the policy says they need to be impartial.
