Heat-related illnesses up in June across North Texas

Dallas-Fort Worth has yet to see its first official 100-degree day of 2021. But as we have seen this month, the heat does not have to touch triple digits to be dangerous and even deadly.

On Thursday, when the heat index rose to 105, MedStar implemented its extreme weather protocols for the second time in under two weeks.  That means a priority upgrade for patients located outside in an unprotected area to limit both the patient and responders from exposure to the extreme heat.

MedStar crews treated more than a half-dozen patients with heat-related illnesses on Thursday.  Of those, five were transported to area hospitals, with four listed in serious condition.

For the month of June, MedStar has treated 108 patients with primary heat-related conditions.  A majority were transported, and seven ended up in critical condition.

MedStar Spokesman Matt Zavadsky said the heat can be dangerous for individuals of all ages.  While the typical patient in such cases is around 45 and male, Zavadsky said they have treated a range from six months old to centenarians.

There are several major precautions to take in the North Texas summer heat, especially for those who are outdoors for a prolonged period of time: Hydrate, Ventilate, Cover Up, Limit Activity and Check on Loved Ones.
