The oppressive heat is uncomfortable for most of us, but it can be downright dangerous for others.

No doubt you've heard calls to check on your elderly family and friends during a heatwave and that's because older people often have a harder time adjusting to extreme heat for a lot of reasons.

First, because they're older and wear and tear on the body may have taken a toll on their circulatory systems and sweat glands.

Older people are more likely to be on meds and some medications can affect your ability to regulate your body temperature.

Diet can impact how you respond to heat and many older Americans are de-hydrated. The CDC says that heat-related illnesses like exhaustion and heat stroke can be deadly when not treated properly.
