This extremely hot weather isn't stopping high school students from getting ready for football and band this fall.
Summer practices have started back up and student-athletes, musicians, and teachers are having to be extra diligent due to the record-breaking heat. Dr. Brandon Williamson at Texas A&M says there are no specific heat-related rules statewide, so it's up to the teachers to keep everyone safe. But students can play a big part in that, too.
"You're taking care of your classmates or your teammates whenever you say 'hey, I need a drink of water.' I think that's probably a pretty healthy way to think about it," Williamson said.
Williamson says using the buddy system during practice is also a good way for students to check for signs of heat-related illnesses. He recommends going slow and giving them plenty of breaks, too. Even after they go home, Williamson says they should continue to hydrate and monitor their health.
