Somervell County Chalk Mountain Fire is only 5% contained
The fast-moving Chalk Mountain Fire in Somervell County has now chewed through 1,200 acres and is only 5% contained, as estimated by the Texas A&M Forest Service.

The Somervell County Fire Department is on the scene with help from numerous agencies including the Texas Forest Service.

Just to the north in Hood County, the Granbury Volunteer Fire Department is on alert, saying if you live in Southern Hood County you must be alert for possible evacuations. Nothing has been ordered so far but civil defense sirens will be sounded if necessary.

Fire near Possum Kingdom Lake grows to 500 acres; several homes destroyed
The Palo Pinto blaze named the "1148 Fire" has grown to more than 500 acres overnight and is considered only 10% contained, according to the Texas A&M Forest Service.

The fire is burning near Possum Kingdom Lake where several homes have already burned. Yesterday, the Brazos River Authority announced the public boat ramp at FM 2951 is closed until further notice.

Fire danger ranges from moderate to very high across most of Texas

Fire danger is rated from moderate-to-very-high over most of Texas. But portions of Kaufman, Hunt and Rockwall counties are rated extreme. The Texas A&M Forest Service says continued triple digit temperatures and dry conditions will reduce the moisture in vegetation across the region, increasing the possibility of wildfires. This morning, 212 of Texas' 254 counties are under burn bans.
