As the community greives in Uvalde and across Texas, investigators are working to try and figure why the suspected gunman, Salvador Ramos, targeted kids at school, and it could be a while before we get any answers.
Former Fort Worth Police Chief Jeff Halstead has worked with school districts and other governmental agencies. He says shooters like Ramos usually fit into one of three categories.
"It could be an undiagnosed mental illness, a catastrpohic trauma or personal event, or it's revenge or hatred" said Halstead. "All three will have one of those nexus elements here."
Reports say Ramos had hinted on social media that an attack could be coming, state Sen. Roland Gutierrez said, noting that “he suggested the kids should watch out.”
Halstead says schools had been making progress until two years ago when an effort to defund some police departments led to a reduction of school security officers.
He says getting police on campus would at least get a stand of authority on the scene until other police can arrive.
