Last month, Irving Police Chief Jeff Spivey announced he was retiring from the department after 35 years. Now, we know his next gig.
Spivey will become the new Executive Director for the Caruth Police Institute at UNT Dallas.
His new job will deal largely with formulating new ways to focus on and treat mental health in police officers.
"What's sometimes overlooked is we lose more police officers to suicide than any other line-of-duty death," Spivey says.
"We're men and women, we have all of the same issues and struggles that anyone else has. But when you add to that the 180+ different trauma events that a police officer will see in his or her career, the effects are just astounding," Spivey added.
Spivey replaces B.J. Wagner, who will resume her work as Senior Vice President of Health and Public Safety with Meadows Mental Health Policy Institute.
“I could not be prouder of the work we have done,” said Wagner. “And I am so excited to watch my friend, colleague, and mentor, Chief Jeff Spivey, take CPI to the next level. It has been an honor and pleasure to serve as the Executive Director of CPI and I thank UNT Dallas and Georgetown Law Project ABLE for trusting me as the inaugural Executive Director of the Texas ABLE Center of Excellence for CPI.”
