One student is dead and another is injured after a shooting outside Lamar High School early Monday morning, police say.
The suspected gunman was arrested within minutes of the shooting and faces a charge of capital murder, Arlington police Chief Al Jones said. Their name was not released because they are a juvenile.
Jones said the shooter never went into the high school.
The district canceled classes at Lamar after the shooting and Arlington ISD Superintendent Marcelo Cavazos said it would remain closed on Tuesday. Classes will resume Wednesday.
Cavazos praised Lamar employees, saying they put the school on lockdown immediately. Students were reunited with their parents at Arlington ISD’s Athletics Center.
The shooting occurred around 6:55 a.m. Monday, district officials said.
Parents, students, and community members were urged to stay away from the campus while Arlington police officers conducted their investigation.
