Reunion Tower and other buildings around downtown Dallas will be dimming their lights to 50% power starting Tuesday night through October 10th in an effort to help protect birds migrating south through North Texas. The lights will be dimmed nightly from 11:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
Every spring and fall, nearly two billion birds travel through Texas at night. Light attracts migrating birds, making them vulnerable to collisions with buildings.
Residents and businesses are urged to turn out non-essential lights at night when hundreds of millions of birds pass through Texas.
The "Lights Out Texas" initiative, led by former First Lady Laura Bush, Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson issued a proclamation declaring that period as "Lights Out Nights" in Dallas.
According to the Texas Conservation Alliance, artificial bright lights at night cause birds to become disoriented and distracted. In addition, colliding with building windows and walls is the second biggest cause of death for migratory birds.
More than 1 billion birds will fly over Texas on their annual trip south during this fall migration, and they mostly fly at night.
