Amid the soaring price of almost everything these days, one North Texas city is giving its homeowners a little relief.
"We believe that lowering taxes is the thing to do," said Mansfield Mayor Michael Evans, "so we're going to try to make that happen."
And the city is aiming to accomplish this by boosting its homestead exemption from 10% to 12% of the home's appraised value.
"I think that any kind of relief that you can offer to homeowners or to residents, especially in our city, is a good thing to do," said Mayor Evans.
Evans said homeowners have had to stretch their budgets a little thinner these days.
"We have gas prices up 49% over the course of a year," Evans pointed out. "You've got grocery prices up 13% to 15%."
Evans said he doesn't want to stop at just homeowners.
"I'm hoping that we can also work to give relief to businesses as well," said Evans, "so that everybody can get a share of relief."
Evans said he would like to see the state pitch in as well.
"If we can use some of the excess billions (in gas tax revenue) because of the higher oil prices, it will be great if they can buy down our property taxes," said Evans.
The Mansfield City Council will set the property tax rate this fall.
