Mesquite Police are in mourning after an officer was killed in a shootout Friday afternoon.

The shooting happened after 1:40 p.m. in the parking lot of an Albertsons grocery store in the 1500 block of South Beltline Road. The officer was called to a report of a disturbance.

Police say a man got out a gun, which led to a shootout with the officer.

The officer, Richard Lee Houston II, was struck twice and rushed to Baylor Medical Center. He was pronounced dead at 2:11 p.m.

"This is a senseless act of violence that ripped a loving father from his family," says Mesquite police chief David Gill outside the hospital.

The officer was a 21-year veteran of the Mesquite Police Department, a husband, and a father of three.
