MINERAL WELLS (1080 KRLD)- A 5-year-old was hit by a bus Tuesday morning outside a school in Mineral Wells. Police say the child had just been dropped off at Lamar Elementary by the Public Transit Services bus.
They say the bus started rolling forward after the 5-year-old was dropped off. The child was hit and taken by air ambulance to Cook Children's in Fort Worth.
Police say the child was "alert and conscious at the time of transport."
"We understand that news of such incidents can be distressing, but please be assured that we are doing everything within our power to support the student, their family, and our school community during this difficult time," Mineral Wells ISD wrote in a note to families.
The district said it is providing support and counseling for students and staff who may seek it.
"Our primary focus right now is on the well-being of the student, and we are working closely with local authorities and emergency responders to ensure all necessary steps are being taken," the district wrote.
Mineral Wells Police say officers are gathering evidence, and the investigation is still in the preliminary stage. The department says it will review onboard video footage from the bus and surveillance video at Lamar Elementary.
"It is unknown at this time if any criminal charges will be filed," Mineral Wells Police say.
Mineral Wells' 2023-2024 school year started Monday, August 7.
