Day 3 in the murder trial of ex-police officer Aaron Dean has concluded.
Wednesday, the medical examiner who performed the autopsy on Jefferson in 2019 said the bullet fired by Dean ripped through several vital organs, including her heart. Doctor Richard Freeze said the efforts by the medical response team would have been futile.
Dean had been sent to Jefferson's home to investigate an open door in the early morning hours. The state has rested its case.
On Tuesday, jurors heard from Dean's former partner Carol Darch, who responded to the call with Dean, Abriel Talbert, a former call taker at the city, and neighbor James Smith, who placed the call to the Fort Worth Police Department's non-emergency line.
Dean fatally shot Atatiana Jefferson during a welfare check in October 2019. Jefferson's death garnered national attention and set off protests in Fort Worth.
