North Texas hospitals lacking space; childrens vaccine approaches

The number of COVID-19 cases is headed in the right direction in North Texas, but health officials say hospitals still don’t have much space to spare.

"Overall occupancy remains high because we have other people with non-COVID-related issues in the hospital," says Stephen Love, President and CEO of the DFW Hospital Council. "And we certainly want to get prepared for the flu season."

Love says it’s encouraging that COVID-19 vaccines could soon be available for kids as young as five. Pfizer is seeking FDA emergency approval, and Love says it appears like the process is moving quickly. However, even if it does get the green light, not every parent is ready to let their kids get the shot.

In a recent poll by the Kaiser Family Foundation, only a third of parents said they would let their young kids get the COVID-19 vaccine. 24 percent said they absolutely would not.

"I think the only real stumbling block is we're going to have to educate people on why it's important to get this age group vaccinated," Love says.
